About SACNAS
Advancing Hispanics/Chicanos & Native Americans in Science

SACNAS is a society of scientists dedicated to fostering the success of Hispanic/Chicano and Native American scientists—from college students to professionals—to attain advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership.

SACNAS is a national society with a 36-year history of supporting minority scientists and science students. The society is comprised of over 20,000 members, partners, and affiliates from a diversity of disciplines, institutions, ethnic backgrounds, and levels along the educational trajectory. SACNAS members are dedicated to giving back through mentorship, peer networks, and professional development, and to engaging in science research and leadership of the highest caliber. The organization and its members are committed to encouraging minority students and scientists to advance to their utmost capability.

In 2008–2009, SACNAS embarked on an intensive strategic planning process, engaging representatives of the organization’s board of directors, lifetime members, leadership staff, and other key stakeholders to develop the framework for moving the society and its mission forward. We invite you to view the recently ratified plan for achieving the greatest impact over the next three years: SACNAS Strategic Plan 2009–2011 (PDF).

SACNAS Rocky Mountain Regional Meeting
All SACNAS members are invited to join us in Denver, Colorado, on August 28–29, 2009 for the SACNAS Rocky Mountain Regional Meeting. The event’s purpose is to unite underrepresented students from the Rocky Mountain Region in order to develop leadership skills, establish supportive networks, and strengthen ties to the resources that will help members succeed. By creating this network, members and chapters throughout the Rocky Mountain Region are building a stronger local SACNAS community. Colorado State University, Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State College, Otero Junior College, University of Colorado at Denver, and student members at the University of Northern Colorado are all collaborating in the organization of this event.

SACNAS Celebrates 35 Years and Joins International Community to Address Global Change
In 2008, SACNAS invited all of our members, partners, and supporters to join in celebrating of the organization’s 35th anniversary and in honoring everyone who has contributed and benefited from three and a half decades of excellence in science, mentoring, and cultural connection.

As part of its anniversary celebration, SACNAS joined researchers from around the globe in focusing on climate change, especially in the Arctic and Antarctic. Through its ongoing International Polar Year participation (begun in late 2007), SACNAS continues to engage the underrepresented minority scientific community in addressing the impact of global ecosystems change on the polar regions, the planet, and the health and well-being of all Earth’s inhabitants.
