The system will send an automated email to that student with your program’s unique access code for registration and summer program abstract submission instructions.

Step 3: Manage student abstract submissions
Program directors may send reminders to students regarding abstracts submissions through their MySACNAS account.

    SACNAS Research Presentation Program Overview

SACNAS research presenters receive mentorship & support throughout the research presentation process: abstract writing tutorial & resources; abstract review & feedback from SACNAS mentors; poster preparation & presentation skills tutorials & resources; presentation feedback from conference mentor-judges; and, postconference steps to continue your professional development.

Formats for the presentation of scientific research at the annual conference:

    • Student Poster Presentations: Undergraduate & graduate students are invited to apply to present a research poster during one of four poster sessions at the conference. Prior to the conference, you will be assigned a presentation day (Friday or Saturday), poster number and presentation time prior to the conference. All poster presenters receive professional mentorship/judging. Undergraduate poster presenters are eligible for recognition at the conference awards ceremony.
    • Graduate Student Scientific Symposia: Graduate students are invited to apply to present a research talk (12-minute presentation followed by 3-minute question & answer period). Graduate student symposia presenters receive professional mentorship/judging. All graduate symposia submissions not selected for oral presentation may present their research as a student poster presenter. Graduate symposia presenters are eligible for recognition at the conference awards ceremony. (NOTE: Not available to summer program participants.)
    • Postdoc Poster Presentations & Networking Reception: Postdocs are invited to present their research and network with professional from industry, government, and academia. This special event connects postdocs with employment opportunities and research fellowships. (NOTE: Not available to summer program participants.)

Accepted abstracts will be published in the conference abstract volume.

SACNAS Abstract Submission Guidelines & Prerequisites

    Prerequisites:
To be eligible to submit an abstract, individuals must be:

    • registered for the 2010 SACNAS National Conference, and
    • a current SACNAS member
Have questions about registration fees or member dues? Contact registration manager, Dawn Contreras at (toll free) 1-877-SACNAS-1, ext 223. For info about how to work with someone at your institution to sponsor your registration/dues, please contact SACNAS at info@sacnas.org.

    Basic Guidelines

    1. All abstracts must be submitted through the SACNAS online submission system. Students will be prompted to the submission system after completing conference registration.
    2. Abstract word limit is 250 (maximum).* No graphics or schema are allowed in SACNAS abstract submissions.
    3. Summer program abstract submissions deadline: 7/20/2010.
    4. All abstract submissions are professionally reviewed. After receiving feedback from mentor-reviewers, students are highly encouraged to update their abstract submission (based on SACNAS reviewer suggestions, developments in on-going research, and consultations with advisors/mentors) to represent themselves and their research in a professional and polished manner in the abstracts volume.
    * Note re: incomplete results: if research results are not available the time of the submission deadline, authors are encouraged to submit predicted results, discussing the significance and implications of predicted results. Students are similarly encouraged to discuss differences between predicted and actual results when presenting research at the conference.

    Guidelines: Structure

    • Title (not part of abstract 250-word count limit)
    • Introduction
    • Hypothesis, purpose, or objective (as appropriate per discipline)
    • Essential methods and materials used
    • Results/predicated results
    • Summary and conclusion

    Guidelines: Authorship

    • Abstract submission must be completed by the individual presenting the research at the conference.
    • For collaborative research projects, more than one author may submit a single abstract. SACNAS may allow more than one author to present the research at the conference. For more information on multiple presenters of shared research, please contact Nancy Rocha, nancy@sacnas.org.
    • If the abstract is selected for presentation, but the presenter listed is unable to present for any reason, the presentation space will be forfeited. SACNAS cannot guarantee that another member of the research group may serve as a substitute presenter.

    Guidelines: Audiovisual Equipment

    • Poster presenters are prohibited from using audiovisual (AV) equipment, electrical outlets, laptops, or tables. Use of AV or other equipment will result in disqualification of the presentation.

Poster Board dimensions are 8 ft (wide) x 4 ft (tall)
Posters may be smaller, but no larger than this.

    • Graduate student scientific symposia (oral) presentations may be supported with additional equipment/materials such as: PowerPoint presentation via LCD projector, overheads, or slides. A laptop computer will be provided by SACNAS for all graduate student symposia sessions.

    Abstract Review Criteria

Each abstract will be reviewed by a minimum of two discipline-specific professionals. The SACNAS Student Presentations Committee has developed the following criteria for review of abstracts:

    1. Hypothesis/purpose/objective of research is clearly stated
    2. Methods and materials essential to the research are identified
    3. Results (or predicted results) are clearly represented; and, results logically support proposed or predicted conclusions
    4. Scientific merit and future directions of the research are explained
    5. Well-developed writing skills are evident
