Judges for student poster and oral presentations in all science areas are needed! If you are a professional joining us in Anaheim for the 2010 SACNAS National Conference, we kindly request that you volunteer to serve as a student presentation judge. Atleast 150 individuals are needed to ensure all student presenters are mentored and presentations are judged fairly.
  • Eligibility- Postdoctoral scientist, faculty member or program director
  • Additional Information: Judges review approximately 10 --15 student posters over the course of the two-day poster event. And approximately
  • 4 --5 graduate oral presentations.

SACNAS offers travel and lodging support for undergraduates, graduates, postdocs, and precollege teachers to attend the SACNAS National Conference. A complete Travel Scholarship application includes the online form (including a 500-word Statement of Purpose), an unofficial Transcript, and Letter of Reccomendation. 2010 SACNAS Distinguished Awards Nominations
The SACNAS Distinguished Awards program recognizes the contributions of mentors, researchers, and educators dedicated to the advancement of minority scientists. Individuals are encouraged to nominate a colleague (or themselves) for one of the following awards:
  • SACNAS Distinguished Service to the Society Award
  • SACNAS Distinguished Scientist Award
  • SACNAS Distinguished Undergraduate Institution Mentor Award
  • SACNAS Distinguished Community/Tribal College Mentor Award
  • SACNAS Distinguished Professional Mentor Award
  • SACNAS Distinguished STEM Education Award
All award recipients will be honored at the 2010 SACNAS National Conference taking place September 30-October 3 in Anaheim, California.

Undergraduate/Graduate Scholarships, Internships and Fellowship
Application Process for NHSC Loan Repayment Program Now Faster and Easier
Significant changes have been made to reduce the complexity and required documentation in the application process for the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program. It is now faster and easier to apply!

The NHSC awards up to $50,000 toward repayment of qualifying, outstanding, educational loans for primary medical, dental and mental health clinicians. Funds are provided in exchange for a commitment of two years of service at an approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area.

Call for Nominations - Overcoming Challenges Award
The ACS Women Chemists Committee Overcoming Challenges Award is designed to recognize a woman undergraduate from a two-year or four-year institution for her efforts in overcoming hardship to achieve success in chemistry. The recipient of the Overcoming Challenges Award will receive a plaque, a monetary award of $250, and a $1,000 travel stipend for expenses to attend the Fall 2010 ACS National Meeting where she will be recognized at the WCC Luncheon.

Inter-Tribal Council of AT&T Employees - 2010 Spring Scholarship Program
The Inter-Tribal Council of AT&T Employees (ICAE) has developed the 2010 Spring Scholarship Program as a way of reaching back into local communities to financially assist distinguished students in continuing their higher education.  The ICAE Scholarship Program will issue scholarship grants to qualified applicants who are selected primarily for their individual merit. Download application.

Minority fellowships for Gordon Conference on Physics Research and Education
Gordon Conference on Physics Research and Education: Experimental Research and Labs in Physics Education will take place in Mount Holyoke College from June 6-11.   http://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?year=2010&program=physedu

Carl Storm Minority Fellowships are available for $600 to defray the cost of registration/room/meals etc. (which adds up to $825 for single room in Mount Holyoke College dorm where everybody will stay). NASA Planetary Science Summer School
NASA is accepting applications from science and engineering post-docs, recent PhDs, and doctoral students for its 22nd Annual Planetary Science Summer School, which will hold two separate sessions this summer (19-23 July and 2-6 August) at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.  During the program, student teams will carry out the equivalent of an early mission concept study, prepare a proposal authorization review presentation, present it to a review board, and receive feedback.  At the end of the week, students will have a clearer understanding of the life cycle of a robotic space mission; relationships between mission design, cost, and schedule; and the tradeoffs necessary to stay within cost and schedule while preserving the quality of science.  Partial financial support is available for a limited number of individuals.

Scholarships Available to Study in Turkey
Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) - a Washington, DC-based nonprofit that was founded in 2007 to foster a better understanding of issues related to US-Turkish relations and Turkish Americans. As part of its mission, TCA offers scholarships to African American, Hispanic American and Native American students who choose as their study abroad destination. Inspired by TCA’s efforts to build bridges between minority communities in the US and Turkey, Istanbul Technical University (Turkey’s oldest and one of Europe’s leading engineering schools) has offered 10 comprehensive scholarships (tuition+room+monthly stipend) per semester solely to Native American students, whereas Bahcesehir University – a dynamic school in social sciences – offers tuition scholarships to up to 8 students of African American, Hispanic American and Native American heritage per semester.

SACNAS Summer Leadership Institute - Deadline April 15
The SACNAS Summer Leadership Institute is the premier training module for underrepresented minority (URM) scientists interested in amplifying their leadership skills. Developed in collaboration with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Summer Leadership Institute is an intensive five-day course featuring small group exercises, keynote speakers, leadership development planning, networking opportunities, and extensive community building among selected participants.

Keystone Symposia Awarded $1.37 Million, Five-Year NIH Grant to Fund Ongoing Diversity Efforts
Keystone Symposia is pleased to announce receipt of a $1.37 million, five-year MARC grant from NIGMS/NIH Entitled "Empowering Visible Ethnic Minority Scientists and Trainees at Keystone Symposia," the grant will fund the organizations efforts to enhance participation in biomedical research by historically underrepresented US ethnic minorities.
