If you are a professional joining us in Anaheim for the 2010 SACNAS National Conference, we kindly request that you volunteer to serve as a student presentation judge. Atleast 150 individuals are needed to ensure all student presenters are mentored and presentations are judged fairly.

  • Additional Information: Judges review approximately 10 --15 student posters over the course of the two-day poster event. And approximately

The SACNAS Distinguished Awards program recognizes the contributions of mentors, researchers, and educators dedicated to the advancement of minority scientists. Individuals are encouraged to nominate a colleague (or themselves) for one of the following awards:

  • SACNAS Distinguished Undergraduate Institution Mentor Award

A.T. Anderson Memorial Scholarship
AISES' own scholarship program was established in 1983 in memory of A.T. Anderson (Mohawk), a chemical engineer who founded AISES with six other American Indian scientists. Scholarships are awarded to members of AISES who are American Indian/Alaskan Native college students pursuing academic programs in the sciences, engineering, medicine, natural resources, and math.

AISES Burlington Northern Santa Fe Foundation Scholarship
Administered for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Foundation, this scholarship is made available to American Indian high school seniors every year, who reside in states serviced by the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Pacific Corporation and its affiliated companies. The award is for 4 academic years (8 semesters) or until baccalaureate degree is obtained, whichever occurs first. AISES Google Scholarship
The AISES Google Scholarship will fund scholarships awards to American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian AISES members pursuing degrees in the computer science, computer engineering and management information systems. Application Process for NHSC Loan Repayment Program Now Faster and Easier
Significant changes have been made to reduce the complexity and required documentation in the application process for the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program. It is now faster and easier to apply!

The NHSC awards up to $50,000 toward repayment of qualifying, outstanding, educational loans for primary medical, dental and mental health clinicians. Funds are provided in exchange for a commitment of two years of service at an approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area.

Keystone Symposia Scholarship Opportunities

Carl Storm Minority Fellowshis are available for $600 to defray the cost of registration/room/meals etc. for the Gordon Conference on Physics Research and Education which will take place from June 6-11 at Mount Holyoke College. This adds up to $825 for single room in Mount Holyoke College dorm where everybody will stay, there is no limit to the number of fellowships awarded.

Scholarships Available to Study in Turkey
Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) - a Washington, DC-based nonprofit that was founded in 2007 to foster a better understanding of issues related to US-Turkish relations and Turkish Americans. WestEd, a non-profit research, development, and service agency, is conducting an efficacy study of AnimalWatch, an online, adaptive intelligent tutoring system tying 6th grade mathematics subjects with authentic environmental science material and is aligned with California Mathematics Content Standards. Teachers can use AnimalWatch for reinforcing pre-algebra skills, strengthening concepts, and reviewing for assessments. Keystone Symposia Announces its 2011 Meeting Season
Keystone Symposia's 40th meeting season begins October 2010. There are over 50 meetings in 2011 in life science and biomedical research on topics including biochemistry, cell biology, infectious diseases, genetics/genomics and developmental biology. Scholarships and student rates are available.
Latin American Workshop on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials
Participate in the IX Latin American Workshop on Magnetism, Magnetic Materials and their Applications (IX LAW3M) and the Latin American School on Magnetism to be held in the last two weeks of July, 2010. Both events will take place at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Manizales, Colombia. The meeting will consist of plenary sessions devoted to invited lectures (at least 15 invited speakers are expected) and to short contributed oral presentations, as well as poster sessions.

Abel Prize to John T. Tate for path-breaking work
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has decided to award the Abel Prize for 2010 to John Torrence Tate, University of Texas at Austin, for his vast and lasting impact on the theory of numbers. The President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, Nils Christian Stenseth, announced the name of the 2010 Abel Laureate at the Academy in Oslo today, 24. March. John Tate will receive the Abel Prize from His Majesty King Harald at an award ceremony in Oslo, Norway, May 25. The Abel Prize recognizes contributions of extraordinary depth and influence to the mathematical sciences and has been awarded annually since 2003.

Betty Preece SEES Memorial Fund
Each year at the National Winter Meeting, American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) hosts one hundred minority, low-income students who participate in a three hour hands-on activity program entitled Students Exploring Engineering and Science (SEES). This innovative program was ardently sponsored and promoted by emeritus AAPT member, Betty P. Preece, who died last year.

In honor of Betty and in recognition of the beneficial impact of the SEES program, AAPT has established the Betty Preece SEES Memorial Fund. Bringing Underrepresented Groups into Mathematics: Two Programs Honored for Outstanding Efforts
The American Mathematical Society honors the Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics, Rice University, and the Summer Program in Quantitative Sciences, Harvard School of Public Health, for their outstanding job of bringing more individuals from underrepresented minority groups into the mathematical sciences.
Keystone Symposia Awarded $1.37 Million, Five-Year NIH Grant to Fund Ongoing Diversity Efforts
Keystone Symposia is pleased to announce receipt of a $1.37 million, five-year MARC grant from NIGMS/NIH Entitled "Empowering Visible Ethnic Minority Scientists and Trainees at Keystone Symposia."  The grant will fund the organization's efforts to enhance participation in biomedical research by historically underrepresented US ethnic minorities.
National Lab Day
National Lab Day is a nationwide initiative to build local communities of support that will foster ongoing collaborations among volunteers, students and educators. Volunteers, university students, scientists, engineers, other STEM professionals and, more broadly, members of the community are working together with educators and students to bring discovery-based science experiences to students in grades K-12. On May 12, 2010, this day will be celebrated with National Lab Day activities around the country.

NCSU Mathematics Department Receives AMS National Award
The Mathematics Department at North Carolina State University has received the 2010 AMS Award for an Exemplary Program or Achievement in a Mathematics Department. NSCU's mathematics department offers research in a broad range of areas, high-quality teaching and mentoring, strong ties to industry, and a welcoming environment for underrepresented groups.
NIGMS Strategic Plan for Training and Career Development - Input Requested
NIGMS has just launched a strategic planning process focused on its research training and career development activities. We’re seeking broad input from university and college faculty members and administrators, current and former predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees, industry representatives, representatives of professional and scientific organizations, and other interested parties. Input can be via the Web from March 2 to April 21, at regional stakeholder meetings between April 29 and June 4, or in a webinar for predoctoral and
postdoctoral trainees on June 11.

C. Job Listings
Listings of paid job advertisements—professional researcher, administrator, postdoc and other positions—are posted on the SACNAS Jobs page. On the Opportunities pages—Internships, Scholarships, Graduates, Postdocs and Conferences/Workshops—SACNAS posts paid listings of career advancement opportunities. Paid text ads for both jobs and other opportunities receive added exposure via inclusion in the bi-weekly e-nouncements.
