If you are a professional joining us in Anaheim for the 2010 SACNAS National Conference, we kindly request that you volunteer to serve as a student presentation judge. Atleast 150 individuals are needed to ensure all student presenters are mentored and presentations are judged fairly.

  • Additional Information: Judges review approximately 10 --15 student posters over the course of the two-day poster event. And approximately

SACNAS offers travel and lodging support for undergraduates, graduates, postdocs, and precollege teachers to attend the SACNAS National Conference. A complete Travel Scholarship application includes the online form (including a 500-word Statement of Purpose), an unofficial Transcript, and Letter of Reccomendation. Student Abstract Reviewers Needed
SACNAS is recruiting for the 2010 National Conference Abstract Selection Committee. Abstract reviewers enhance the quality of science presented at the SACNAS National Conference through a supportive and encouraging critical review of student abstracts.  
  • As SACNAS research presentations constitute a rigorous scientific activity and a significant mentoring opportunity, SACNAS requests that those interested in reviewing abstract submissions hold a terminal degree in their field.  
  • SACNAS abstract reviews will occur ONLINE, May 3 – 14.  Abstract reviewers will be able to review abstracts from any internet location, at any time during the review period.  Conference attendance is not mandatory for membership in Abstract Selection Committee.

Application Process for NHSC Loan Repayment Program Now Faster and Easier
Significant changes have been made to reduce the complexity and required documentation in the application process for the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program. It is now faster and easier to apply!

The NHSC awards up to $50,000 toward repayment of qualifying, outstanding, educational loans for primary medical, dental and mental health clinicians. Funds are provided in exchange for a commitment of two years of service at an approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area.

CHCI Congressional Internship Program
Congressional Internship Program Mission
The purpose of the Congressional Internship Program is to expose young Latinos to the legislative process and to strengthen their professional and leadership skills, ultimately promoting the presence of Latinos on Capitol Hill.

Congressional Internship Program Description
The Congressional Internship Program provides college students with a
paid Congressional work placement on Capitol Hill for a period of
twelve weeks (Spring/Fall) or eight weeks (Summer).  This unmatched
experience allows students to learn first hand about our nation's
legislative process.

Promising Latino undergraduates from across the country are selected
for this leadership training program.  Students gain work experience,
participate in a community service project, and receive educational
and professional programming provided by CHCI. This comprehensive
three-prong approach provides extraordinary learning and networking
opportunities for students.

K-12 Opportunities
Exciting Opportunity to Participate in WestEd AnimalWatch study!
WestEd, a non-profit research, development, and service agency, is conducting an efficacy study of AnimalWatch, an online, adaptive intelligent tutoring system tying 6th grade mathematics subjects with authentic environmental science material and is aligned with California Mathematics Content Standards. Teachers can use AnimalWatch for reinforcing pre-algebra skills, strengthening concepts, and reviewing for assessments. Students receive free access to the AnimalWatch system and participating 6th grade teachers would be eligible to receive stipends from $600-$1500!

Infrastructure Academy Environmental High School Curriculum
The Infrastructure Academy is offering free curriculum for two high school courses - Environmental Technology and The Impact of Energy on the Environment. The courses offer students an opportunity to apply science and engineering concepts to real-world environmental challenges while introducing them to green careers. Spanish Language Resources Available
Spanish-language health science resources are freely available from the Miami University Center for Chemistry Education. (Materials in English also available.) Materials are designed for use with young teens and families. Available Spanish-language resources include Lather Up (Hand Washing) and More than Skin Deep (Skin Health) books, along with other activities for use in camps and clubs. Materials were developed with funding from a Science Education Partnership Award ARRA Supplement from NCRR, a component of NIH.

Third Annual World Science Festival in NYC June 2-6, 2010
The brightest minds in science will descend on New York City for the 2010 World Science Festival from June 2-6. The highest profile event of its kind will feature 40 unique programs in scientific disciplines ranging from astronomy, physics and genetics to neuroscience, robotics and mathematics. The Festival's programs will also integrate traditional arts disciplines-- dance, theatre, music and the visual arts -- to underscore that science is everywhere.

Abel Prize to John T. Tate for path-breaking work
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has decided to award the Abel Prize for 2010 to John Torrence Tate, University of Texas at Austin, for his vast and lasting impact on the theory of numbers. The President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, Nils Christian Stenseth, announced the name of the 2010 Abel Laureate at the Academy in Oslo today, 24. March. John Tate will receive the Abel Prize from His Majesty King Harald at an award ceremony in Oslo, Norway, May 25. The Abel Prize recognizes contributions of extraordinary depth and influence to the mathematical sciences and has been awarded annually since 2003.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund and Ad Council Launch National Education Campaign
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund recently launched its first ever national advertising campaign with the Ad Council. This campaign will be the Ad Council’s first major national initiative behind a Latino non-profit and is set to address one of the most pressing issues regarding disparities in education and our nation. The campaign focuses on Latino parents and families. The underlying message Your Words Today/Tus Palabras de Hoy is a call to action for Latino parents to talk to their children about college today, telling them that they have no option but to go to college and complete their degree.

NIGMS Strategic Plan for Training and Career Development - Input Requested
NIGMS has just launched a strategic planning process focused on its research training and career development activities. We’re seeking broad input from university and college faculty members and administrators, current and former predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees, industry representatives, representatives of professional and scientific organizations, and other interested parties. Input can be via the Web from March 2 to April 21, at regional stakeholder meetings between April 29 and June 4, or in a webinar for predoctoral and
postdoctoral trainees on June 11.
