The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) is seeking an exceptionally talented and experienced manger to direct its Central Engineering organization (CE). As a member of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), SAO's mission is to advance knowledge and understanding of the universe through research and education in astronomy and astrophysics. Central Engineering staff conceive, design and fabricate cutting edge instruments--both space-borne and ground based--used in these scientific investigations. CE's Director will oversee the day to day operations of the department; and foster an engineering capability that is state of the art, maximally responsive to the overall scientific goals of the CfA, and positioned for future scientific collaborations.
To qualify, you must possess, as a minimum, a BS in engineering or the physical sciences (MS or PhD preferred), and substantial experience in engineering or technical management. To attract the broadest range of talented candidates, this position is being advertised at two levels. The successful candidate at the IS 15 level must be a highly skilled manager who will effectively direct the day to day operations of the department and develop its workforce and facilities to position it for future growth. At the Senior Level, candidates must also have demonstrated leadership skills and be able to develop and promote collaborations with external scientific and/or engineering organizations that will enhance SAO's position as a leading institution in the development of scientific instruments.
