STUDENT RESEARCH PRESENTATIONS MENTORING & JUDGING

Graduate and undergraduate students from all scientific disciplines share and defend their research in the form of oral and poster presentations. Presenters receive constructive feedback throughout the abstract submission and presentation process. Presenters defend their research and compete for various awards during the conference. Professional judges support student presentations, providing an invaluable experience for SACNAS students to prepare for entry into the science profession as accomplished research presenters. This powerful professional development opportunity is made possible by the participation of a large contingent of mentors/judges. (Students interested in presenting, see the Call for Student Abstracts page for more information.) Opportunities to support student presentations as a review or judge include:

    Peer Reviewers
Graduate students are invited to participate as Peer Reviewers during the student poster and oral presentations. This is an excellent opportunity to act as a mentor and interact with other students. SACNAS student presentations are a rigorous scientific activity; peer review and feedback serve to enhance positive professional growth, as well as provide a nurturing environment for all student presenters, especially those presenting for the first time.

    Oral Presentations Judges
Graduate student oral presentation judges review between approximately 4 – 6 student talks. Judges serve not only to score presentations based on the review criteria, but to offer guidance to students in their development as presenters. As orals constitute both a rigorous scientific activity and a mentoring opportunity, SACNAS requests that those interested in judging hold a terminal degree in their field.

    Poster Presentations Judges
Graduate and undergraduate student poster presentation judges review between approximately 10 – 15 student posters over the course of the two-day poster event. Judges serve not only to score posters based on the review criteria, but to offer guidance to students in their development as presenters. As posters constitute both a rigorous scientific activity and a mentoring opportunity, SACNAS requests that those interested in judging hold a terminal degree in their field. (Graduate students and others interested in supporting poster presentations, please see Peer Reviewers above.)

    Judging Sub-Committee Chairs
The SACNAS conference and the number of student presentations continues to grow tremendously. For this reason, SACNAS has implemented the position of sub-committee chair to oversee the student presentation evaluation process for each research field. sub-committee chairs are responsible for ensuring that all presentations within their respective discipline have been evaluated, scores are tallied and final recommendations for awards are provided to the Student Presentation Committee. Each discipline requires at least one chair.
