Dandole Alas a tu Exito/ Giving Flight to your Success
The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) along with Southwest Airlines announces the opening of Dandole Alas a tu Exito/Giving Flight to your Success an annual education travel award program. The travel tickets are awarded to undergraduate and graduate Hispanic students with socio-economic need who journey away from home to pursue higher education. Each student is elligible to receive one to four tickets which a student or an immediate family member can use in the Fall to travel to/ from a college or university.

NNSA Consortium Internship Program
A separately organized agency within the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) manages and secures the nation’s nuclear weapons; prevents nuclear terrorism; and responds to nuclear and radiological emergencies in the U.S. and abroad. NNSA is joining SACNAS, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), and the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES) in the NNSA/Consortium Internship Program to provide college students with challenging, hands-on, educational internship opportunities beginning at $5,000. This is the first year of the program, which will be open to undergraduate students and master’s level students. In coming years, the program will be open to post-doctoral students. SEEDS Fall Fieldtrip
SEEDS Field Trips meet the SEEDS mission by providing exciting opportunities for underrepresented undergraduate students to explore their interest in ecology. Summer School in Biophysics at ORLN
The three day summer school in biophysics targets graduate and senior undergraduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in physics, computer and materials sciences, mathematics and chemistry who are interested in considering biosciences as a future career direction. The Summer School program in biophysics at ORNL will be held on August 3-5, 2009, at UT Conference Center, targeting graduate and senior undergraduate students and postdocs in technical fields.

ASCB Junior Faculty/Postdoctoral Developmental Workshop
The ASCB Minorities Affairs Committee is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for its 4th Annual Junior Faculty/Postdoctoral Developmental Workshop. The workshop is scheduled for June 18-19, 2009. APPLICATIONS ARE DUE MAY 15, 2009. The workshop will be held in Chicago, IL, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. Plenary and breakout sessions will cover areas relevant for the establishment of an academic career at research-intensive and comprehensive/teaching institutions. Session topics will include the following: Professional Conduct, Tenure, Grantsmanship, Mentorship, Ethics/Conflicts of Interest, Writing, Science Policy, Lab Set up and Management.

Summer Leadership Institute - May 15th Deadline!
The SACNAS Summer Leadership Institute is the premier training module for underrepresented minority (URM) scientists interested in amplifying their leadership skills. Developed in collaboration with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Summer Leadership Institute is an intensive five-day course featuring small group exercises, keynote speakers, leadership development planning, networking opportunities, and extensive community building among selected participants. Details: To be held July 28 - August 1 in Washington DC. Selected participants will reciveve funding to cover all registration, travel, lodging, meal and per diem expenses. Upcoming Conferences and Events
14th International Congress on Circumpolar Health
The 14th International Union for Circumpolar Health will take place in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada from July 11 to 16, 2009. The exciting scientific programme is expected to bring 750 health care leaders, decision-makers, and researchers from all over the world to Yellowknife. Hundreds of papers and posters will be presented in a variety of topic areas. Dynamic keynote speakers, poster sessions, and networking events will round out the programme.

Deadline for Virtual Participation in the 2nd Annual IMETI Conference
The deadlines for participation in the 2nd Annual IMETI Conference haev been decided. Extended Abstracts submissions and Invited Virtual Sessions proposals are due May 6th, 2009,  Authors notifications are due June 1st, 2009 and Camera ready, full papers are due June 22nd, 2009. Submissions made for Virtual Participation will go trough the same reviewing processes of the regular papers and, if accepted they will be included in the proceedings and will be eligible for journal publication. Awards will be granted to the best paper of those presented at each session.  
NSRC 2009 Science Education Leadership Development and Strategic Planning Institutes
Join the National Science Resource Center's (NSRC) network of 5,000 professionals representing 30% of the U.S. student population, who have attended one of 65 week-long NSRC Science Education Strategic Planning Institutes. More than 90% of the districts that have invested in this week-long experience have developed and sustained science programs based on research and best practices. The NSRC Science Education Institutes for Leadership Development and Strategic Plannning guide school district leadership teams through an engaging process to develop the knowledge for creating a strategic plan to initiate and implement an effective research-based science education program.

Sixth International Conference on Remote Engineering and Virtual Instrumentation
The Sixth International Conference on Remote Engineering and Virtual Instrumentation (REV 2009) will be held on June 22-25, 2009 at the University of Bridgeport, Bridgeport, Connecticut, U.S.A. 2009 AAAS Mentor Awards
The 2009 AAAS Mentor Awards are now accepting nominations. The two categories of the AAAS Mentor Awards, the Lifetime Mentor Award and the Mentor Award, both honor individuals who during their careers demonstrate extraordinary leadership to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in the science and engineering PhD workforce. These groups include: women of all racial or ethnic groups; African American, Native American, and Hispanic men; and people with disabilities.

American Indian Scientist Needed on May 2

The Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference
The Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference, held April 1-4, 2009 in Portland, Oregon was the most successful conference in the history of the event. This year the conference hit record attendance setting the record at nearly 400 attendees including 249 students and 73 faculty members representing 101 universities. The next Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference will be held in 2011, save the date!

SACNAS accepts submission of short items (75 words or less) via the online e-nouncements form for posting to the SACNAS e-nouncements free of charge.
