Judges for student poster and oral presentations in all science areas are needed!
If you are a professional attending the 2010 SACNAS Conference, SACNAS kindly requests that you volunteer to serve as a student presentation judge. At least 130 individuals are needed to ensure all student presenters are mentored and presentations are judged fairly. Eligibility: SACNAS requests judges to hold a PhD in their field. Additional Information: Judges review between approximately 6 student posters per day and/or 4-5 graduate student oral presentations. Sign up today! SACNAS Green Initiatives and Native Energy

Summer Deadline for SACNAS Travel Scholarships & Abstracts
SACNAS provides a summer travel scholarship application and abstract submission process specifically for students participating in summer research programs. This process requires that program directors enroll their summer research program in the SACNAS system.
The summer program enrollment system opens on Monday May 17th. Please take note that there are separate summer deadlines for each program:

SACNAS Hires Two New Directors
SACNAS is honored to welcome two new directors to its staff leadership team. Dr. Matthew Martinez (Ohkay Owingeh) will serve in a new position as Director of Native American Initiatives. Dr. Angelina Dayton joins the team as the Director of Programs. Both have vast experience in higher education, program development, and advancing minority communities.
Dr. Martinez received his PhD in American studies from the University of Minnesota, his MA in political science from Arizona State University, and his BA in political science and Spanish from the University of New Mexico. He brings a breadth of experience to SACNAS, including his immediate past work experience as Director of Indian Education at the New Mexico Higher Education Department.
Dr. Dayton received her PhD in educational administration and leadership from the University of the Pacific, her MA in interdisciplinary studies in education from Stanford University, and her BA in anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley. Her work experience will be of great value to the organization, which includes an immediate past position as the director of the McNair Scholars Program at the University of California, Merced.

The SACNAS Strategic Plan outlines a number of focused initiatives, including our new science policy program. To support our policy efforts, SACNAS has opened a satellite office at the ACS building within the heart of D.C., where Vice President for Science Policy and Strategic Initiatives, Dr. Robert Barnhill, and other key staff will be based.

Chapter Annual Reports second deadline: June 30
Submission of annual reports is a requirement for chapters to retain ACTIVE status. Chapter officers may access the new annual report form online; it is the responsibility of chapter officers to submit the annual report by the deadline to prevent the chapter from becoming inactive.

Application Process for NHSC Loan Repayment Program Now Faster and Easier
Significant changes have been made to reduce the complexity and required documentation in the application process for the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program. It is now faster and easier to apply!
The NHSC awards up to $50,000 toward repayment of qualifying, outstanding, educational loans for primary medical, dental and mental health clinicians. Funds are provided in exchange for a commitment of two years of service at an approved site in a Health Professional Shortage Area. Deadline: 6/29/10

Salish Kootenai College New Science Teaching Degree
Salish Kootenai College, the tribal college of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, is offering a new Bachelor of Science in Science Education degree to prepare middle school and high school science teachers. Senior Research Assistant Intern Position
The Senior Research Assistant position under the Health and Treatment Research Divison at the Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University is an internship position encouraged for Barbara Jordan Scholars. Keystone Symposia Fellowship Program, 2010-2011
The Fellowship Program provides context, understanding and insight regarding the development of high-powered research meetings, utilizing shadowing experiences with scientist organizers and key Keystone Symposia staff members. Fellowship experiences allow for learning how the research agenda is set, how to engage in high-level discourse on research topics and how to broaden perspectives in life science research. 5th Annual NIH National Graduate Research Festival
Applications are being accepted for the 5th Annual NIG National Graduate Research Festival to be held October 25th and 26th on the main NIH Campus in Bethesda, Maryland. The purpose of this event is to recruit outstanding young scientists to postdoctoral positions in the intramural research program in the U.S. and on scheduel to complete thier PhD degree requirments by October 2011.

Keystone Symposia Announces its 2011 Meetings
Keystone Symposia's 40th meeting season begins October 2010. There are over 50 meetings in 2011 in life science and biomedical research topics including biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, infectious diseases, genetics/genomics and developmental biology. Scholarships and student rates are available.
