American Society of Hematology (ASH)
The MMSAP is an eight- to twelve-week summer research experience for minority students in their first or second year of medical school. The benefits include a $5,000 stipend and two mentors to help guide them through their experience. Additional long- and short-term benefits are provided to participants throughout medical school and residency, including complimentary copies of ASH publications and travel allowances for attending the ASH annual meeting. There is no fee to apply.

Funded Summer Research Opportunities in Environmental Health at Univ of Washington, Seattle
Funded 10 week summer research experiences for undergraduate students in environmental health. Stipend will be at least $5200. IBM's Cell Broadband Engine Contest
IBM Announces First of Its Kind Cell Broadband Engine Contest for Students Across the Globe IBM announced a first of its kind programming contest for college and university students in 25 different countries, offering cash prizes and awards for the most innovative applications of the breakthrough Cell Broadband EngineT (Cell/B.E.).
By working directly with the Cell/B.E., students will be getting hands-on experience with cutting edge technology as well as building tangible, multi-disciplinary skills that will give them a competitive edge as they enter the workforce. Participants will need to demonstrate their mastery of the theoretical and practical uses of Cell/B.E. technologies to rise to the top, as they complete an online quiz testing their knowledge of Cell/B.E. trivia, and then develop an innovative software program based on the technology.

MAES Graduate Outreach Programs Internships
NPR & Talk-Radio Wannabees: The MAES Director of Graduate Outreach Programs, Dr. Mike Lopez, is seeking interns for nonprofit work. Would you get a kick out of interviewing friends and professors on audio tape? He needs students to spend a few hours a week learning the art of the one-on-one interview. Please send your resume and expression of interest to pagess@maes-natl.org. This is an unpaid internship, but approved student expenses will be paid by the project. Professional members are also welcome to take part as volunteers. The project has all the materials and equipment. You provide voice and time. Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) Internship Program
The MBARI internship program is open to educators and college students (undergraduate and graduate level). There are no application forms other than the material listed below. Applications for the 2007 program are now being accepted, however the cover letter should also list the project that you are most interested in working on this summer. Complete applications should include a curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, a cover letter, and the online supplemental information form (this can be found at the above URL). The cover letter should include your specific research interests, your reasons for applying to MBARI, and a list of relevant courses and grades earned. The Minority Scholars Award
The Minority Scholars Award is presented annually to 10 medical students from minority groups historically underrepresented in the medical profession. The $10,000 awards are offered with support from the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative.
The Minority Scholars Award recognizes personal commitment to improving minority health status, scholastic achievement and financial need among minority students. Eligible nominees are medical students from one of the following underrepresented minority groups: African American/Black, American Indian, Native Hawaiian, Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino. Nominees must be a permanent resident or citizen of the Unites States in their first or second year at an accredited medical school.
Eligible candidates must be nominated by the medical school dean or dean’s designate. Each medical school may nominate up to two individuals for this award. The AMA Foundation must then receive completed nomination forms no later than April 16.

Undergraduate Mathematics Research Program (REU)
Grand Valley State University, in western Michigan, invites interested undergraduates to apply for NSF REU summer research fellowships in mathematics. Financial support includes a research stipend of $3200, housing in on-campus air-conditioned townhouses (with your own bedroom), and a generous food allowance. Current areas of research among faculty mentors include billiards and dual billiards, voting theory, metric geometry, and equal circle packings. Past student research projects have resulted in publications in various journals.

White House Internship Program
The White House Internship Program offers an excellent opportunity to serve our President and explore public service. We are seeking exceptional candidates to apply for this highly-competitive Program. In addition to typical office duties, interns attend weekly lectures, tours and complete an intern service project.
Interns may serve a term in the Fall, Spring or Summer. Every candidate must be a U.S. citizen, enrolled in a college or university and be at least 18 years old.

Education Seat Recruitment - Monterey Bay Sanctuary Advisory Council
The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is seeking applicants for the following vacant seat on its Sanctuary Advisory Council (council): Education Primary. Applicants are chosen based upon their particular expertise and experience in relation to the seat for which they are applying; community and professional affiliations; philosophy regarding the protection and management of marine resources; and possibly the length of residence in the area affected by the sanctuary. The advisory council meets every other month in daytime public sessions held in varying locations along the coast bordering the sanctuary.
The Education Primary seat, which was vacated by the previously appointed representative before the end of the term, will begin their term in April 2007 and should expect to serve until February 2008. Leopold Leadership Program 2008 Fellowships
The Leopold Leadership Program at the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University invites mid-career academic environmental scientists from North America (Canada, Mexico and the United States) to apply for the 2008 fellowships that provide scientific leadership, communications and outreach training.
Through a competitive process, the Leopold Leadership Program selects up to 20 Fellows to participate in an intensive training program designed to build and enhance the skills of academic environmental scientists to communicate with policy makers, media representatives, businesses, non-profit organizations, and the general public. The program’s mission is to advance environmental decision-making by providing academic environmental scientists with the skills and connections needed to be effective leaders and communicators. The program seeks candidates with terminal degrees from a broad range of disciplines including biological, physical and social sciences (e.g. economics, political science) and technical, medical and engineering fields (e.g., wildlife veterinary medicine, environmental health, hazardous waste management) related to the environment. Applicants must be employed by an academic institution in North America, be at mid-career as a tenured or tenure-track professor (associate professor or professor level or equivalent), and be active in teaching and research. NOSB - Otter Bowl Needs Volunteers
The Marine Advanced Technology Education Center at Monterey Peninsula College hosts the NOSB - Otter Bowl here in Monterey on Feb 24 2007. We are seeking willing volunteers to help with the competition. High school teams from Monterey to Tomales bay compete in the competition. Its a round robin, double elimination format where teams compete to answer questions relating to the ocean sciences. Humboldt State University, nationally known for its strong natural
resource management programs is pleased to announce that thirty students will receive $3623 a year for 4-years. All students interested in studying Computer Science, Mathematics or Environmental Resources Engineering with a GPA of 2.75 or higher and financial need should apply http://www.humboldt.edu/~sls/. Girls on Ice
Girls on Ice is a unique eleven-day leadership program for teenage girls that combines leadership, mountaineering and science. The program takes place July 22-August 1, 2007 and is free to girls who qualify via a merit-based application process. It is open to girls 15-18 years old who have shown a keen interest in science and the outdoors. Nine young women will be selected and the ideal candidate will be an inquisitive, adventurous girl who would like to learn more about scientific inquiry, research, careers in science and the Northwest environment. It is the only program in the nation that combines leadership, scientific inquiry and mountaineering for teenage girls. It provides a rare opportunity for young women to feel at home in the wilderness while observing the natural world through the unique lens of science under the guidance of professional female glaciologists and mountaineers.

MERITO/Monterey Bay Aquarium Cartoon Contest
Multicultural Education for Resource Issues Threatening Oceans (MERITO)
has partnered with the Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA) in sponsoring a cartoon contest. Cartoon strips must in some way support the theme of protecting our watersheds, ocean and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Any 5th-12th grade student living in Monterey or Santa Cruz Counties is eligible and winners will be announced at MBA's Dia del Nino event on Sunday, April 15th. Grand Prize includes $200 and artwork displayed on the side of a Monterey-Salinas Transit bus. Runner-up prizes include admission to the aquarium and passes to MBA's Science Under Sail and Underwater Explorers programs. Deadline: 3/16/07

Summer Science Program (SSP)
SSP is an exhilarating 6-week experience in which high school students, working in teams, learn how to apply physics and calculus to determine the orbit of an asteroid using their own observations from a professional grade telescope. Along the way, students also meet prominent guest speakers and take behind-the-scenes fieldtrips to places like NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory or the Very Large Array of radio telescopes. Young women and minority students are especially encouraged to apply.

The Cornell Association for the Technological Advancement of Learned Youth in Science and Technology
The Cornell Association for the Technological Advancement of Learned Youth in Science and Technology(CATALYST) program is a one-week summer residential program for rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors from underrepresented backgrounds. CATALYST seeks to advance diversity in engineering and especially encourages members of groups underrepresented in the fields of math, science, and engineering (African American, Latino/a, or Native American) to apply. The program is sponsored in part by a grant from Cornell Alum, Dick Rothkopf '67, and through the generous support of the Motorola Foundation.
Participants will be exposed to hands-on projects in engineering research fields and lab sessions led by world renowned engineering faculty. Academic and leadership skill development, panel discussions, social events, and other out-of-classroom activities will provide participants with opportunities to informally network with Cornell faculty, staff, and students.
This summer, spend a week making new friends, experience life on a university campus, and explore the many exciting possibilities awaiting you in engineering.

The Summer Science Program
The Summer Science Program (SSP) is one of the oldest and most successful summer enrichment programs for academically gifted high school students, and the only one managed and largely funded by its own alumni. SSP takes place at campuses in Socorro, New Mexico, and Ojai, California. Enrollment at each campus is limited to 36 students, mostly rising seniors from around the U.S. and the world, chosen through an admissions process very similar to that of selective colleges. A program fee is charged for the six week residential session, with generous need-based financial aid available. Funding for the 18th International Conference on Arabidopsis Research (Beijing, China)
Full funding offered for up to 8 individuals to attend the Annual Arabidopsis meeting in Beijing (June 20-23, 2007).
