2008 U.S. DOE Paid Summer Undergraduate Laboratory Internships

SACNAS has partnered with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science to provide an exciting ten week paid summer undergraduate internship program for thirty talented students.  The program aims to deepen research interests and enhance technical skills by exposing young scientists and engineers to the exciting range of opportunities offered through the DOE.  

The deadline is this Friday, February 1, 2008, for preferred consideration.

AAMC fee assistance program now accepting applications
The AAMC's Fee Assistance Program (FAP)--which helps defray the cost of applying to medical school and taking the entrance exam--is now accepting applications for 2008. The FAP reduces or waives fees associated with the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) and the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) for applicants whose annual family income is 300 percent or less of the federal poverty level. To receive fee assistance this calendar year, qualified applicants must obtain approval from the FAP prior to registering for any MCAT 2008 test dates or entering into the AMCAS 2008 medical school application cycle.
American Chemical Society Scholars Program
The American Chemical Society Scholars Program is now accepting applications for the 2008-2009 academic year. This is a renewable undergraduate scholarship program for African-American, Hispanic/Latino and Native American students majoring in or planning to major in a chemical science, such as chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering or other chemical science-related discipline. Hispanic Scholarship Fund Applications now Available
Scholarship applications for the 2008-2009 academic year are now available online at WWW.HSF.NET. Last year, HSF awarded nearly 4200 scholarships and over $26.5 million to high school seniors, undergraduate and graduate level college students. The online application must be completed and all requested materials must be postmarked and sent to HSF by the deadlines listed on the website. The deadline for most scholarships is MARCH 15, 2008.

The prestigious NIH IMSD in biomedical sciences at the University of Arizona, awards ten underrepresented students yearly admitted to one of sixteen biomedical Ph.D. programs at the University of Arizona. The Lunar and Planetary Institute is offering undergraduate students with 50 semester credit hours or more the chance to experience cutting-edge research in lunar and planetary science. Native American and Pacific Islander Research Experiences (NAPIRE) Program
Native American and Pacific Islander Research Experiences (NAPIRE) Program is accepting applications for summer 2008. Research Experience in Molecular Biotechnology & Genomics
This REU program at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, focuses on providing an intensive research experience focused on molecular biology, biotechnology and genomics of animals, microbes and plants. Summer Interships Available in Polar Research
The Polar Earth Observing Network (POLENET) is a science and technology project funded by a major grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Scientists and engineers work together in the Arctic and Antarctica to better understand the feedbacks between the solid earth and the polar ice sheets as global climate changes. Three types of internships are available to work on the POLENET project. Each runs from approximately mid-June to mid-August; pays a stipend and also pays for room & board and travel; and provides for participation in national science conferences. Successful applicants are eligible to participate for multiple summers in POLENET research.

Gateways to the Laboratory Summer Program, sponsored by the Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan-Kettering Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program in New York City. SMDEP at UNMC is designed to identify, recruit, and assist future dentists and doctors while providing outreach to underserved populations. This is achieved through a comprehensive 6 week summer experience for current freshmen and sophomore students. Triangle Coalition Annual Conference on STEM Education Policy
Triangle Coalition has opened registration for its Annual Conference on STEM Education Policy. The Conference will be held on February 25-26 and will focus on key issues confronting education leaders at all levels. Among the topics at this year's conference will be the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind (NCLB), and the continuing discussion concerning American competitiveness and the best approaches to STEM education.
