In 2017, over 3,800 college students through professionals met in Salt Lake City, Utah for 2017 SACNAS. The conference opened with keynote speaker and Nobel Laureate Dr. Mario Cappechi, followed by 3 additional keynote talks, and 3 fantastic featured speakers. Over the 3+ days, attendees could select from 119 breakout sessions, covering topics such as “MD-PhD, Is It Right For Me?”, “Building Effective Pathways to Indigenous Participation in STEM”, “Interview Success! How to be Your Best at the Graduate School Interview”, and many others. In between sessions, students could visit resume build rooms to prepare for networking in the Graduate School & Career Expo Hall, which featured 383 total booths with recruiters and opportunities from the University of Utah, USDA, California State University, Central Intelligence Agency, Gilead, Intel, and many more. In the evenings, attendees would attend a variety of networking receptions (including LGBT, Math Community, Native Community, SACNAS Leadership Alumni, SACNAS Chapter, and Women in STEM receptions), the Friday night Pow Wow, and Saturday evening ¡Pachanga! (SACNAS dance). In total, 1,000+ students presented their research throughout the conference and, with the help of 200 mentor-judge volunteers, 117 students received awards for their presentations.
