Cohort for 2018 Linton—Poodry SACNAS Leadership Institute Announced

A new cohort of thirty scientists joins the largest community of emerging STEM leaders of color in the country. The Linton-Poodry SACNAS Leadership Institute (LPSLI) is the hallmark leadership training program by Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).

Founded in 2009 by Dr. Clifton Poodry (Seneca) and Dr. Marigold Linton (Cahuilla-Cupeño), both founding members of SACNAS, the LPSLI is the country’s premier training for motivated underrepresented minority (URM) scientists, laying the foundation for them to lead institutional transformation. In collaboration with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the LPSLI is an intensive five-day course featuring small group exercises, keynote speakers, leadership development planning, networking opportunities, and extensive community building among selected participants.

Linton, the Director of American Indian Outreach at the University of Kansas and past-president of SACNAS said, “I was concerned that SACNAS' PhDs were not going on to high level leadership positions.  We created the LPSLI to produce leaders who will change the face of science."

This year’s institute will be held July 16 – 20 at the AAAS headquarters in Washington, DC. Speakers will include Dr. Chinonye Nnakwe, a Program Officer with National Science Foundation and LPSLI alum and Dr. Lawrence Tabak, Principal Deputy Director of National Institutes of Health.

Alumni of LPSLI are now executive directors, program directors, assistant deans, department chairs, entrepreneurs, senior scientists in industry, and emerging science policy leaders.

LPSLI is the third in a suite of four leadership trainings offered by SACNAS in 2018. The programs are dedicated to building the capacity of our students and professionals with the necessary leadership skills to advance their education and careers and to lead change at the highest levels.
