PRE-CONFERENCE
Kick off your conference experience with bonus programming on Wednesday, October 26. All attendees are invited and encouraged to take advantage of various workshops to equip, empower, and energize you before the conference even begins! Most workshops require advance sign-ups. See below for detailed information.

Modern Math Workshop
Wednesday October 26, 12 PM – 6 PM
Thursday October 27, 8:45 AM – 12 PM
As part of the Mathematical Sciences Collaborative Diversity Initiatives, the six NSF-funded U.S. mathematics institutes will host their annual SACNAS pre-conference event, the 2022 Modern Math Workshop (MMW), on October 27 and 28. The MMW encourages undergraduates from underrepresented groups to pursue careers in the mathematical sciences, and builds research and networking opportunities among undergraduates, graduate students, and recent PhDs.
The workshop includes two mini-courses aimed at undergraduates, research sessions aimed at graduate students and recent PhDs, a panel addressing professional issues of interest to both, and a reception open to all participants. The 2022 MMW is organized by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI). Click here for scholarship opportunities: https://www.msri.org/workshops/1056

SACNAS Urban BioBlitz Experience
Wednesday October 26, 1:00 PM – 5:30 PM
Come BioBlitzing with us at the Governor Pedro Roselló San Juan Convention Center. We will walk to natural areas around the convention center and explore and document the amazing biodiversity in the city of San Juan, Puerto Rico! During this activity, you will get a chance to experience Puerto Rico’s amazing biodiversity while learning about free and open community science tools for documenting biodiversity anywhere. As part of this experience, you will also get the chance to engage with local and international biodiversity scientists from a variety of backgrounds and careers.
There is another opportunity on Saturday listed below (both free!), so visit here to learn more and register now:

DURING THE CONFERENCE

Conversations with Scientists
Thursday, October 27, from 12:30-2 PM
Conversations with Scientists is SACNAS's signature mentoring event that has been occurring for over 30 years. In this 90-minute program, undergraduate and graduate students can meet and speak with mentors in their own fields. Participants are divided up based on discipline, and then, by sub-discipline. Mentors answer specific questions, and also share their own educational and professional stories.

Mentor Judging
October 27 to 29, for approximately 2 hours
For many students getting direct mentorship can make all the difference in validating and motivating them to persist in their STEM journey. By serving as a mentor judge, volunteers provide constructive feedback and motivation to student research presenters, including many first-time presenters and first-generation college students. In addition to giving back to student SACNISTAs, this is a great opportunity to get exposed to new research in your field, as well as networking and recruiting talented students.
Eligibility:
- Motivated to provide positive and constructive feedback to student presenters
- Must be a STEM professional with a Master’s degree or PhD
- Currently in a Master’s or PhD program? You will be assigned to undergraduate poster presentations
- Previous experience in judging/mentoring similar events preferred but not required!
- Must be a registered attendee for the 2022 SACNAS NDiSTEM conference
