SACNAS celebrates the latest ruling from U.S. District Judge John D. Bates in Washington, DC which ordered the government to continue the DACA program and reopen it to new applicants. Judge Bates’ ruling is consistent with a series of court-backed decisions in favor of reinstating DACA.

The reinstitution of DACA would keep nearly 800,000 DACA recipients from upending their lives, the lives of their families, and the American economy. More so, it would preserve the sheer intellectual power of their diverse perspectives in all sectors, including STEM fields. A 2015 survey conducted by the largest immigration youth led network in the country, United We Dream, found that more than 40% of the respondents envisioned STEM-related careers as doctors, scientists, and engineers, among others.

Judge Bates stayed his ruling for 90 days to give the Department of Homeland Security a chance to provide more solid reasoning for ending the program. In his decision, Bates said the decision to phase out the program starting in March “was arbitrary and capricious because the Department failed adequately to explain its conclusion that the program was unlawful.”

SACNAS stands in support of our “Dreamers” and fully supports the Dream Act. This legislation, if passed and implemented, would provide a permanent solution for these young people and be an important step forward in enacting comprehensive immigration reform legislation.
