Student and Professional Chapters Honored For Their Outstanding Work in 2020-2021

WASHINGTON, DC – On Wednesday, October 13 from 3-4pm PT / 6-7pm ET, Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) will recognize seven chapters with “Chapter of the Year” Awards, including 6 student chapters and 1 professional chapter.

During this ceremony, participants will hear from each chapter about the amazing work they’ve done throughout the 2020-2021 academic year. We invite all SACNAS members to join us to help celebrate the amazing work of our chapters.

“SACNAS Chapters were imagined as a partnership between the SACNAS national organization and institutions throughout the country with the goal of advancing diversity and inclusion in STEM,” says Dr. Pamela Padilla, SACNAS President, “Each SACNAS chapter develops programming on its respective campus focused on networking, professional development, scientific engagement, and community service. We are so proud to recognize the efforts of the 133 student and professional chapters nationwide.”

“We all won this award together, and I was extremely blessed to work with such a passionate and dedicated executive board,” says Yale University SACNAS Chapter President, Steven Paniagua, “Given the full year of limited person-to-person interaction, the level of support that we were able to give each other and our members made us an incredibly close community. I hope for the growth and success of all the SACNAS organizations that have been severely impacted during these difficult times.”

“Undoubtedly, the Chapter of the Year Award exemplifies the voices that relentlessly aspire to break down minority barriers and foster spaces that characterize us as leaders of scientific impact. As a Puerto Rican, this recognition reaffirms the scientific talent of our island,” says Kaimy A. Torres-Hernández, President of the SACNAS Chapter at University of Puerto Rico, Cayey Campus.

“Indudablemente, ejemplifica a las voces que marcadamente aspiran a derribar barreras minoritarias y a fomentar espacios que nos caractericen como líderes de impacto científico. Como puertorriqueña, dicho reconocimiento testifica y reafirma el talento científico de nuestra isla.”
