Frequently Asked Questions

For the past 48 years, SACNAS has been deeply committed to building community, celebrating our unique identities, and providing access to opportunity for thousands of STEM college students and professionals across the country, a majority from historically excluded populations. One of the main ways we do this is by producing and hosting the National Diversity in STEM Conference.

Last year, our country faced an unprecedented global event with the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout these difficult times for our community, SACNAS persisted, and together, we thrived. SACNAS hosted the organization’s first-ever digital conference, which saw record-breaking participation with over 5,700+ attendees, 863 student research presentations, 346 exhibiting companies and 25 sponsoring partners to meet and recruit our SACNAS members.

In light of the ongoing pandemic, the safety and well-being of our conference attendees is our top priority. After surveying our members, partners and supporters, and monitoring the rate of vaccine rollouts and COVID-19 infection rates throughout the country, we’ve decided that the best course of action is to bring together our community in the safest way possible.

For these reasons we are excited to announce that the 2021 SACNAS National Diversity in STEM Conference will be a fully digital experience! If you had a great time at last year’s conference, or didn’t get a chance to attend, this year will be twice as incredible. We will be offering all new experiences, a brand new platform, and more chances to connect with the SACNISTA familia than ever before.

After closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation, we wanted to make sure to finalize our event platform and roll-out to make sure we are providing SACNISTAs with all the tools needed to have a successful and safe conference. We are building the infrastructure to make sure our registration and application processes are more seamless than ever.

The physical safety of our members, staff, and community is of paramount importance to SACNAS, after reviewing all of the information currently available and with potential virus variants being unknown the Board of Directors voted to have a Digital Conference this year.

This year’s conference will feature a rich agenda including:

  • Motivational keynote speakers
  • Robust offering of STEM Symposia and Professional Development sessions
  • Student research presentations
  • Graduate School and Career Expo Hall
  • Cultural celebrations, art, and music
  • Group and 1-on-1 mentoring opportunities

SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in STEM) has put on the SACNAS National Diversity in STEM Conference for several decades – however, SACNAS is more than just a conference. We are a year-round membership organization dedicated to helping foster the success of our members in STEM. In order to reflect that our annual conference is one important part of what we do, we have renamed the conference NDiSTEM – The National Diversity in STEM Conference. Additionally, we plan to host other conferences in the future, such as our CareerCon in 2022.

Diversity and inclusion are more than just words to SACNAS. They are integral parts of our history, culture, and identity. They are the principles that founded our organization and guide our strategic path forward. We continually seek to build and maintain a culture that reflects the rich diversity of our country. We look for and celebrate diverse voices, experiences, backgrounds, and talents. We believe that an inclusive organization is one where all people feel empowered to be their full, authentic selves. Simply put, everyone is welcome at SACNAS.
