SACNAS Statement on Racist Violence in Charlottesville

Dr. Lino Gonzalez, President of the Board of Directors for the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) issued the following statement after this weekend’s tragedy in Charlottesville, Virginia when a rally of conservative extremists incited deadly violence.

“Our thoughts and prayers go to the families of the victims of this weekend’s horror and to the millions who bore witness with fear in their hearts. The victims of this national tragedy were targeted because of their belief in diversity, which is a tenet of SACNAS.

“Sadly, acts driven by hate and racism take place all too frequently in our country. But even more disheartening has been the recent surge of vitriol unleashed against communities of color, which now often poses as policy. This has created an atmosphere in which hate groups and individuals with racist views feel empowered to act out on their worst instincts. Some of our members have been targets of these acts, solely because of the color of their skin. We will not stand idly by.

“As the nation’s largest multicultural and multidisciplinary STEM diversity organization, we work tirelessly for equity and inclusion in higher education and the workplace. SACNAS will continue to fight against all forms of racism, whether it is overt violence, or the silent bias that feeds it. We have stayed steady in our work to achieve true diversity in STEM for 44 years and will, in spite of these turbulent times, continue our work of celebrating science, culture, and community.”

DECLARACIÓN DE SACNAS SOBRE LA VIOLENCIA RACISTA EN CHARLOTTESVILLE

SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA– El Dr. Lino González, presidente de la junta de directores de la Sociedad para el Avance de los Chicanos/Hispanics y Nativo Americanos en las Ciencias (SACNAS, por sus siglas en inglés) hizo las siguientes declaraciones en respuesta al fin de semana violento en Charlottesville, Virginia en la que una manifestación de conservadores extremistas se tornó mortal.

“Nuestros pensamientos y oraciones están con los familiares de las víctimas y con los millones que fueron testigos de un acto que les ha sembrado miedo. Las víctimas de esta tragedia nacional fueron atacadas por creer en la diversidad, una creencia principal de nuestra organización.

“Desafortunadamente los actos que nacen del odio y el racismo ocurren frecuentemente en nuestro país. Peor aún es el auge de la retórica en contra de las minorías que en varias instancias se disfraza de política pública. Esto ha creado un ambiente en el que grupos de odio e individuos con perspectivas racistas se sienten empoderados para actuar sobre sus peores instintos. Algunos de nuestros miembros han sido el blanco de estos actos simplemente por el color de su piel. No nos quedaremos callados”.

“Como la mayor organización mutilcultural y multidisciplinaria enfocada en la diversidad en los campos de las ciencias, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas (STEM, por sus siglas en inglés) a nivel nacional, trabajaremos arduamente para lograr equidad e inclusión en la educación superior y el entorno laboral. SACNAS continuará luchando en contra de toda forma de racismo, ya sea violencia o el sesgo silencioso que la alimenta. Hemos trabajado sin cesar por 44 años por lograr verdadera diversidad en los áreas STEM y a pesar de estos momentos turbulentos, seguiremos enalteciendo la ciencia, la cultura y la comunidad”.
