The SACNAS Board of Directors meaningfully contributes to serving SACNAS and its mission through setting (1) strategic direction, (2) providing oversight, and (3) ensuring resources to foster the success of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans, from college students to professionals, in attaining advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership in STEM.

How to Submit Your Nomination 

  1. The candidate must be a SACNAS member. Become a Member / Renew Membership Here. 

  2. Read Candidate Criteria and Board Member Responsibilities and Expectations (PDF), SACNAS Code of Conduct and Ethics Policy, and the 2021-2026 SACNAS Strategic Plan.  

  3. Submit a completed nomination application, which includes uploading an abbreviated (5-page max) CV/resume and professional headshot. 

  4. Submit a 5-minute (or less) video about why you want to run for the SACNAS Board of Directors.

  5. The nomination deadline is July 15 2025 at 11:59 PM PDT. 

Self-nominations are welcome. To nominate someone else, please share this webpage with them or contact elections@sacnas.org and provide the name and contact information of the person you would like to nominate so that SACNAS can invite them to submit their nomination materials.

Why serve on the board?

Board members provide guidance and vision for our organization through direct service, fundraising, and top-level leadership. As the largest multicultural and multidisciplinary STEM diversity organization in the country, SACNAS seeks candidates from all STEM sectors to consider a self-nomination for the National Board of Directors. Bring your unique skills, expertise, and experiences to help lead our community and further the mission of SACNAS.
 
In addition to the personal satisfaction of giving back to an organization that fosters the success of the next generation of STEM talent, serving on the board comes with professional opportunities and unique experiences that will enrich your career and life. It’s also a valuable opportunity to deepen your leadership skills and governance experience. 

Available Positions

President-Elect:

Term length: 4 years: (2026: President-Elect, 2027 and 2028: President, 2029: Past-President)

General Board:

Term length: 3 years (January 2026 – December 2028) 

 

Candidate Criteria, Board Responsibilities & Expectations

SACNAS seeks candidates who are: 

  • Leaders or executives in all three sectors (academia, government/nonprofit, & private industry), especially but not limited to the physical sciences and engineering.  
  • Not required, but experience in fund development, governance, business practices, and finances/budget is desired.  
  • Candidates must: 
    – Read and agree to the Board Member Responsibilities and Expectations (PDF) 
    – Read and agree to SACNAS Code of Ethics  

Election Process & Results

Per SACNAS bylaws, all dues-paying members are eligible to vote. Professional and postdoc members can vote for general board members. Undergraduate and graduate student members can vote for graduate student board members.

Results: 
Elections results are published on the SACNAS member-only website and announced to the membership via email the second week in December.
