Lifetime Member Dr. Luis Echegoyen to be American Chemical Society President-Elect

SACNAS congratulates Lifetime member and University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) Professor of Chemistry Dr. Luis Echegoyen, on his recent election as president-elect of American Chemical Society.

“I am really honored by this election and look forward to implementing many new and ambitious programs to benefit the ACS and its many members,” said Dr. Echegoyen.

After moving to Puerto Rico from Cuba in the 1950s and excelling in Chemistry, Dr. Echegoyen attended the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras, publishing nine academic articles while he completed his PhD. He then attended the University of Wisconsin of Madison for a postdoctoral position, where wise words from a mentor renewed his confidence and re-energized his determination.

Since then, Dr. Echegoyen has worked in industry, government, and academia. Today his research group at UTEP works with carbon to increase efficiencies for solar energy and lighting devices.

As president-elect, Dr. Echegoyen says he plans to meet with ACS members and strengthen interactions between ACS and other scientific societies such as SACNAS. He will serve as president of ACS in 2020. Congratulations, Dr. Echegoyen!
