SACNAS Member Anahi Gamboa Spends Month in Mexico Doing Research Through Northern Illinois University Internship Program

Southeast senior and 2018 SACNAS presenter Anahi Gamboa spent one month in Mexico doing research with fellow students and mentors through the Northern Illinois University internship program.

Gamboa was one of six students chosen to participate in this undergraduate research experience, a program funded by the National Science Foundation. The program offers six projects, all researching divergent forms of water quality in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.

Gamboa spent the duration of the program researching water quality in relation to public health. She studied tourists, residents, and conducted surveys to determine any water-borne illnesses related to people’s travels. Gamboa has completed the analysis of the tourist’s data and yielded findings thus far.

Of the program, Gamboa says, “This was a very special internship for me to be able to do research where I’m from and where my family is from.”

Congratulations, Anahi Gamboa! We look forward to hearing about your research findings at our 2018 conference.
