Over the past weeks, I have watched in profound sadness as events across the country, have caused harm, distress, and loss within Native and Indigenous, Hispanic and Latino(a), and broader communities. Reports of individuals being detained, and the tragic deaths of community members have weighed heavily on my heart, especially as so many families and neighborhoods grapple with fear and grief.
As Executive Director of SACNAS, I want to affirm clearly what I have said in countless conversations with our members: everyone deserves dignity, safety, and humane treatment, not just in principle, but in practice. SACNAS stands firm in its mission and continues to thrive because of the strength and resilience of its members.
The contributions of Native and Indigenous people and Hispanic and Latino(a) people to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), education, research, and culture are invaluable. Our leadership, brilliance, and resilience continue to strengthen our society in countless ways.
In times of profound grief and uncertainty, many of us are asking: What can we do? We can show up for one another and remain attentive to the challenges our community is facing as they continue to evolve. We can respond with care, compassion, and respect, grounded in shared humanity. We can strengthen and sustain pathways for connection, collaboration, and support across communities. We can, and will, move forward together, while extending grace to ourselves and others. And we can uplift those who are seeking ways to learn, engage, and contribute to the collective wellbeing of our communities.
SACNAS remains a trusted resource for building relationships and fostering community at a time when no one should feel alone, regardless of where they are from or what stage in their professional journey they are in. From senior leaders to the youngest voices in our community, we can be advocates for one another, for the future of our neighbors, and for STEM.
